5. Actual results

Results

Gonorrhoea section (full-text sections read): recommended regimen for uncomplicated urogenital/rectal gonorrhoea is ceftriaxone 500 mg IM single dose (1 g if >=150 kg), plus doxycycline if chlamydia not excluded; 'a single injection of ceftriaxone 250 mg is >99% (95% CI 97.6%-99.7%) effective in curing anogenital gonorrhea'. 'Among women, gonococcal infections are commonly asymptomatic or might not produce recognizable symptoms until complications (e.g., PID) have occurred. PID can result in tubal scarring that can lead to infertility or ectopic pregnancy.' Men: symptoms often lead to treatment 'but often not soon enough to prevent transmission to others'.

Absolute risks

Cure >99% with single-dose ceftriaxone (250 mg data)

Authors' conclusion

Gonorrhoea should be treated with ceftriaxone; partners should be evaluated and treated.

10. Relevance to the specific claim

Defines the standard of care and the complications of untreated infection.

11. Independent contrary findings

None.

12. Transferability to Germany and Europe

High; European guidance is similar (antibiotic treatment, partner notification).

13. Overall methodological judgement

Gonorrhoea is reliably cured by a single antibiotic dose; untreated infection can cause PID, infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
