Food-safety governance and official controls

How are food-safety responsibilities and official controls organised in the EU/Germany and in Egypt, and do the two systems produce comparable data?

Germany and the EU have detailed food laws and publish yearly test results. Egypt created one central food-safety authority in 2017 and has issued many rules, but we could not find public yearly test reports for food sold inside Egypt. Because of this, the two countries cannot be compared directly on most questions. Missing data is not proof of a problem, but it means caution is needed in both directions.

Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 (General Food Law; in force) sets the principle that unsafe food must not be placed on the market (Art. 14), created EFSA and the rapid alert system RASFF. Regulation (EU) 2017/625 (in force) governs official controls by Member States and on imports. In Germany the federal states (Länder) carry out controls; BVL coordinates national monitoring and residue plans; BfR performs risk assessment. Labelling: Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011.

Law No. 1 of 2017 (published 10 January 2017) created the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) as a single authority; before that more than 17 bodies under several ministries shared food-safety duties. Executive regulations: Cabinet Decision 412/2019. NFSA has issued binding technical decisions, e.g. on veterinary drug residue limits (13/2020), permitted pesticide residues (6/2021), chemical contaminants (6/2022), microbiological criteria (1/2021), traceability (16/2022). The content of these decisions could not be read for this review (PDFs blocked).

The DG SANTE 2025 audit reports that the export chain has separate, stricter programmes (operator registration, traceability, pre-export sampling) and that NFSA's mandate was to extend to the domestic market from January 2026. No published, standardised national monitoring report of the domestic Egyptian food supply comparable to the EFSA/BVL reports was found.

評価

Both jurisdictions have a modern legal framework for food safety; Egypt's unified authority is young (2017) and the audit evidence shows a reform process with a strong focus on exports. The EU side has long time series of public monitoring data; for the Egyptian domestic market such data are largely missing in the public domain. This asymmetry is itself the main finding: the absence of public Egyptian monitoring data does not show that Egyptian food is unsafe, and the existence of EU data does not show that all EU food is safe.

Egyptian NFSA decisions (limit values) not read; no public NFSA annual monitoring report found; domestic official control coverage unknown.

Pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables on the EU/German market (incl. imports from Egypt)

How often do fruit and vegetables on the EU and German market exceed pesticide MRLs, and how do products of Egyptian origin compare within the same programmes?

When fruit and vegetables from Egypt are tested at EU borders and in German shops, they break EU pesticide limits more often than the average for imported food, and some products like peppers and vine leaves are checked extra often. German-grown produce breaks the limits in about 1 in 100 samples. Breaking a legal limit does not automatically mean a health danger, and EU experts rate the overall risk as low. These numbers say nothing about food sold inside Egypt.

Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 sets MRLs; where no specific MRL exists a default of 0,01 mg/kg applies (Art. 18(1)(b)). Substances not approved in the EU usually face this default. Imports of selected high-risk goods are subject to increased checks under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1793.

EFSA 2024 report: national programmes 86,449 samples, 1.8 % non-compliant; EU-coordinated programme 9842 samples, 1.2 % non-compliant; increased import controls 39,433 samples, 3.6 % non-compliant; dietary risk 'low for most of the EU subpopulation groups'. Germany (BVL 2024, 16.423 samples): MRL exceedances 1,0 % for German produce, 1,5 % for other EU, 6,7 % for third countries; no quantifiable residues in 57,8 % / 38,3 % / 40,1 %.

Products exported to the EU must meet EU MRLs. The DG SANTE 2025 audit notes that Egypt's MRL list is referenced primarily to Codex, with some MRLs higher than EU values, and that 118 active substances in Egyptian-registered products are not approved in the EU.

Within the same EU/German programmes: 2023 EFSA data quoted by DG SANTE give 4.61 % non-compliance and 8.14 % MRL exceedance for food imported from Egypt, versus 3.4 % and 6.2 % for all non-EU exporters. Orange non-compliance at EU import fell from 15 % (2nd half 2022) to 1.41 % (1st half 2025); peppers around 8 %; all sampled vine-leaf consignments rejected. BVL 2024: Egyptian sweet potatoes 10,9 % objected (5 of 46), mainly mepiquat. Border study (Poland): residue detection in Egyptian strawberries over 90 % in 2023–2024 with eleven MRL exceedances.

評価

This is the one area where data are methodologically comparable, because EU and Egyptian-origin products are tested in the same programmes with the same EU MRLs. Egyptian-origin produce on the EU market had a higher-than-average non-compliance rate for non-EU countries in 2023, and specific commodities (peppers, vine leaves, sugar apples, strawberries) are under increased controls. However, the trend for oranges improved strongly, and EFSA concludes that dietary risk from residues on the EU market is low for most groups. An MRL exceedance is a legal non-compliance and does not by itself indicate a health risk. These figures describe export consignments, not food eaten in Egypt.

Small Egyptian-origin subsets in BVL data; EFSA country-of-origin tables for 2024 not read in full; risk-based sampling inflates rates for targeted commodities.

Pesticide residues in produce sold on the Egyptian domestic market

Is there evidence on pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables sold inside Egypt, and can it be compared with EU monitoring?

We found only a few local studies on pesticide residues in vegetables sold at Egyptian markets. One study from Sharkia found many residues above limits, but it was small and local. Egyptian official checks use different limits from the EU, so their results cannot be compared with EU numbers. Washing and peeling can reduce some residues. A general statement that vegetables are harmful because of pesticides is not supported for Germany and cannot be tested for Egypt with the data available.

DG SANTE 2025: the Egyptian national monitoring system 'shows relatively low non-compliance rates compared to those found in the EU for the same products. But since the benchmarks for compliance are different, the results are not fully comparable.' Peer-reviewed example: farmers' markets in Sharkia governorate – 40.7 % of residues detected in vegetables and 38.9 % in fruits exceeded MRLs; potential acute/chronic risk flagged for some pesticide/commodity pairs.

評価

There are signals of frequent residues in some Egyptian local-market produce, but the available study is local, small and reports exceedances per detected residue rather than per sample, against an MRL benchmark not stated in the abstract. Official Egyptian monitoring is measured against Egyptian (Codex-based) MRLs, which are partly higher than EU MRLs. A quantitative comparison with EU rates is therefore not possible. The archive's statement that vegetables are 'often harmful because of pesticides' is not supported as a general statement for the EU; for Egypt the data are insufficient for a general conclusion.

Antibiotic (veterinary drug) residues in poultry meat and eggs

How often are antibiotic residues found in chicken and eggs in the EU/Germany and in Egypt?

In the EU, about 1 in 800 official samples of animal foods breaks the residue rules. Small studies from Egyptian towns found antibiotic residues in many chicken samples, sometimes above legal limits. These studies are too small and too different in method to be compared with EU numbers or to describe all of Egypt. The bigger health concern is that misuse of antibiotics helps resistant bacteria spread, not direct poisoning from residues.

Peer-reviewed local studies: retail chicken in Egypt (n=100) – oxytetracycline 23 %, gentamicin 21 %, ciprofloxacin 17 % positive; Mit Ghamr (n=180 tissues) – enrofloxacin 51.67 %, oxytetracycline 71.67 %, sulfadimidine 16.67 % detected, more than half of positives above MRL, yet hazard quotients indicated 'no significant health risk'; Fayoum – residues incl. chloramphenicol detected alongside resistant S. Typhimurium.

評価

The Egyptian studies consistently find antibiotic residues in retail chicken, often above MRLs, which suggests that withdrawal periods are not always respected in the settings studied. But they are small, local convenience samples, partly using screening methods, and are not comparable with the EU's large official programmes (different sampling design, analytes, methods and benchmarks). The EU's very low non-compliance rate applies to EU production. The claim that 'industrial chicken' everywhere carries antibiotic residues is not supported for the EU; for parts of Egypt, residue problems are plausible and documented locally, but their national scale is unknown. Even where residues exceeded MRLs, the authors' own risk calculations did not indicate an acute toxic risk; the main concern is antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial use in food animals and antibiotic growth promoters

Are antibiotics used as growth promoters or routinely for prevention in EU/German and Egyptian animal farming?

In the EU, giving antibiotics to animals to make them grow faster has been banned since 2006, and preventive group treatment is strictly limited; sales in Germany fell by two thirds since 2011. In a survey of Egyptian farms, most staff said they also used antibiotics without the animals being sick. So Dr. Elawady's warning fits some Egyptian farm practice better than current EU rules. Resistant bacteria are a problem everywhere antibiotics are overused.

Tilapia sector: antibiotics enter via medicated feed, pond water and agricultural drainage water.

評価

The EU bans growth promoters and routine preventive group use and measures sales; Egypt has no published national sales or use monitoring comparable to ESUAvet. The survey evidence suggests that non-therapeutic use, including of colistin, is common on Egyptian farms surveyed. The archive's statement that industrial chicken is 'raised on routine antibiotics' describes a practice that is prohibited in the EU since 2006/2022 but appears to be reported in Egyptian farm surveys. Antimicrobial resistance is a universal biological consequence of antibiotic use wherever it occurs.

Hormones in poultry, meat, milk and farmed fish

Are hormones used to grow chickens or other food animals in the EU/Germany and Egypt?

Using hormones to make farm animals grow is banned in the EU, and German tests found only 1 problem sample in about 38,000. For Egypt we found only one small study, and its test method cannot tell added hormones apart from the hormones that occur naturally in meat. There is no good evidence that chickens are given growth hormones in either country. Young farmed tilapia are often treated with hormones to make them all male, but we found no data on leftovers in fish sold to consumers.

Directive 96/22/EC (in force) prohibits administering hormonal, thyrostatic and beta-agonist substances to farm and aquaculture animals, with narrow therapeutic/zootechnical veterinary exceptions; it explicitly allows authorised androgen treatment of young fish for the first three months for sex inversion.

評価

In the EU, hormone use for growth is banned and official tests find almost no violations. The single Egyptian study used ELISA screening without confirmatory mass spectrometry and measured hormones that also occur naturally in meat, so it cannot prove illegal use. There is no robust evidence that broiler chickens are raised with growth hormones in either region; fast growth of modern broilers is mainly due to genetics and feeding. Hormonal sex reversal in tilapia hatcheries is a real practice (also legally possible in the EU under strict conditions), but residue data in market fish are missing.

Salmonella in laying hens, eggs and broiler chicken

How common is Salmonella in laying hens, eggs and chicken in the EU and in Egypt?

Salmonella bacteria can be found in chickens and eggs everywhere, including in the EU, where about 1 to 2 in 100 laying-hen flocks carry the most dangerous types. Small Egyptian studies found Salmonella more often, but they used different methods and cannot be compared directly. Proper cooking and clean kitchen practice protect against Salmonella in both countries. This is a reason for careful handling, not proof that eggs or chicken are harmful in themselves.

Regulation (EC) No 2160/2003 requires national Salmonella control programmes; Union targets: ≤2 % of adult laying-hen flocks and ≤1 % of broiler flocks positive for S. EU travel data: Egypt was the reported place of infection for 11.5 % of salmonellosis cases acquired outside the EU in 2024.

評価

Salmonella in poultry and eggs is a universal hazard: even the EU, with mandatory control programmes, still has positive flocks and egg-related outbreaks. The Egyptian studies report higher positivity, but they measure different things (farm samples, retail carcasses, organs) with small local samples, whereas EU figures are flock-level programme results. Travel-associated cases reflect tourist numbers and exposures and are not a measure of Egyptian supply. Cooking eggs and chicken thoroughly and kitchen hygiene reduce risk in both regions. The finding supports a food-hygiene message, not a general ban on eggs or chicken.

Dioxins, PCBs and PFAS in eggs and other animal foods

What is known about dioxins, PCBs and PFAS in eggs and animal foods in the EU/Germany and Egypt?

Long-lasting pollutants such as dioxins and PFAS ('forever chemicals') end up in the environment and in animal foods like eggs and fish everywhere. EU experts say many Europeans take in more than the recommended safe amount over the long term. In German tests, only about 1 in 180 egg samples was above the legal limit. For Egypt there is hardly any data. This is a general environmental problem, not a reason to think that one egg is poisonous.

Regulation (EU) 2023/915 sets maximum levels, e.g. eggs: dioxins 2,5 and dioxins+dl-PCBs 5,0 pg WHO-TEQ/g fat; PFAS in eggs: sum of PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS 1,7 µg/kg (PFAS limits applied since 1 January 2023). EFSA set TWIs of 2 pg TEQ/kg bw/week (dioxins, 2018) and 4.4 ng/kg bw/week (4 PFAS, 2020).

Germany NRKP 2022: only about one of 180 egg samples exceeded dioxin/PCB maximum levels. EFSA: average and high EU intakes of dioxins/dl-PCBs considerably exceed the TWI; parts of the EU population exceed the PFAS TWI; eggs are among the main PFAS contributors.

Ismailia study (2006, HRGC/HRMS): estimated dioxin+dl-PCB intake from dairy, fish and meat 6.04–6.68 pg TEQ/kg bw/day, above the then WHO TDI; eggs not measured. DG SANTE 2024 fishery audit: PFAS not yet included in the export sampling plan at that time. No Egyptian data on PFAS or dioxins in eggs were found.

評価

Persistent pollutants in eggs and animal fat are a real issue, and EFSA itself states that background exposure in Europe exceeds health-based guidance values; this part of the archive's concern applies to the EU too, but it is about long-term background exposure across many foods, not acute harm from eating eggs. Free-range hens can take up soil contaminants, so 'industrial' production is not the specific cause. For Egypt there are almost no recent data, especially none for eggs.

Aflatoxin M1 in milk and dairy products

How much aflatoxin M1 is found in milk in Egypt compared with the EU limit?

Aflatoxin M1 is a toxin from mould that can get into milk when cows eat mouldy feed. Egyptian studies found it often, sometimes above the EU limit, but results differ a lot between studies. It is a question of feed storage and climate, not of hormones. We did not compare it with EU numbers because we did not have comparable EU data.

Recent local study: AFM1 above acceptable limits in 7 % of raw milk and 2.9 % of Ras cheese samples. Larger 2025 meta-analysis ranked Egypt below several neighbouring countries for AFM1 prevalence.

評価

Aflatoxin M1 in milk is a real, climate- and feed-related exposure in hot regions including Egypt; studies vary widely (from a few percent to all samples above the EU limit) depending on season, region, milk type and method. EU data were not extracted, so no direct comparison is made. This contamination is caused by mouldy feed, not by 'hormones' in milk; it is a feed-control issue that also exists in parts of southern Europe in hot years. The archive's general claim that milk 'carries every hormone and pesticide' is not addressed by these data.

Aflatoxins in groundnuts (peanuts)

Are aflatoxins in Egyptian peanuts a documented problem, and what does EU border data show?

Peanuts from Egypt are often stopped at EU borders because of aflatoxins, which are mould toxins that can cause liver cancer. The EU checks 30 % of these shipments. This is a problem of drying and storing peanuts, not a reason why all legumes are harmful. Border numbers show what is exported, not what Egyptians eat.

評価

Aflatoxin contamination of peanuts is a well-documented problem for Egyptian exports, and EU law treats it with special import conditions. Notification counts depend on export volume and control intensity and describe border rejections, not peanuts eaten in Egypt. Aflatoxin B1 is a recognised human carcinogen; this hazard is independent of the 'legume' category as such and concerns storage and drying conditions.

Heavy metals in fish

Are lead, cadmium and mercury in fish higher in Egyptian waters than allowed in the EU?

Fish from some heavily polluted Egyptian lakes, like Lake Manzala, contained more lead than EU rules allow. Fish from other areas tested within limits. In Germany, fish only rarely exceed limits. So the risk depends a lot on where the fish comes from, not on fish as a food in general.

Lake Manzala (600 fish, 2019): mean lead 0.64–0.70 µg/g (above the EU fish limit of 0.30 mg/kg); a 2024 Manzala study: lead 0.87–1.01 mg/kg, cadmium up to 0.12 mg/kg, 'exceeded ... in most samples'. Kafr El-Sheikh (48 fish, 2024): cadmium, mercury, lead all below Egyptian and EU limits. Tilapia from drainage-fed farms (2026): muscle within FAO/WHO limits, but lead close to the 0.3 mg/kg limit; liver much higher. Export plan 2023: 22 heavy-metal samples, all compliant.

評価

Results are partially comparable because Egyptian studies report wet-weight muscle concentrations that can be set against EU maximum levels, but they are local, use different methods (AAS vs ICP-MS) and are not representative of the national market. They show a clear regional pattern: fish from heavily polluted water bodies such as Lake Manzala and drainage-fed sites can exceed EU lead limits, while samples from other areas complied. This supports a regional-exposure finding about specific waters, not a general statement that farmed or wild fish are unsafe.

No Egyptian national fish contaminant monitoring report; origin (farmed vs wild) often unclear; sample sizes of export plan very small.

Farmed fish (aquaculture): drugs, water source and controls

What is known about antibiotic use, hormones and water quality in Egyptian vs EU aquaculture?

Egypt is Africa's largest fish farming country, and most farms fill their ponds with water drained from farmland, which can carry pollutants and medicine residues. One Egyptian study found no drug or pesticide residues in the fish it tested. Fish farming in the EU works differently and has its own controls. The warnings about farmed salmon do not automatically apply to Egyptian tilapia, and the reverse is also true.

Same veterinary-medicine rules as for land animals (Reg. 2019/6; Reg. 37/2010; Dir. 96/22/EC incl. authorised androgen sex inversion of fry). Aquaculture products are sampled in the German residue plan (NRKP 2022 included aquaculture samples).

NRKP 2022: aquaculture samples included (e.g. 55 and 102 samples in specific substance groups), with single non-compliant findings. EFSA 2024 pesticide report: DDT (legacy contaminant) in trout mostly from Germany and Türkiye.

Egypt has no EU-approved residue plan for aquaculture (Annex -I of Reg. 2021/405) and is listed for fishery products 'Only wild catch'. NFSA Decision 1/2022 on technical requirements for fish exports to the EU (content not read).

Egypt produces more aquaculture fish than the rest of Africa combined (1.56 million tonnes in 2018), mainly tilapia in earthen ponds supplied largely by agricultural drainage water (about 70 % of farms); antibiotics are used in feed and pond water. Kafr El-Sheikh study: no antibiotic or pesticide residues detected in 48 fish. Drainage-fed sites: higher metal accumulation, muscle within limits.

評価

Egyptian aquaculture differs structurally from EU aquaculture (drainage water as main source, large pond systems), which plausibly creates regional exposure to agricultural run-off and antibiotic residues; but residue data are scarce and partly reassuring. The archive's farmed-fish arguments (PCBs, omega-3 ratio, sea-lice treatments) mainly come from salmon studies and are not about Egyptian tilapia. Comparisons must therefore be species- and system-specific.

No representative residue data for Egyptian farmed tilapia; no EU tilapia comparison; omega-3 claims not assessed here.

Nitrate in leafy vegetables

Are nitrate levels in leafy vegetables regulated and monitored in the EU and in Egypt?

Leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce naturally contain nitrate, and the EU sets upper limits. We found no studies measuring nitrate in vegetables sold in Egypt. So no comparison is possible.

Reg. (EU) 2023/915: nitrate maximum levels e.g. fresh spinach 3 500 mg/kg; fresh lettuce 2 000–5 000 mg/kg depending on type, season and cultivation; rucola up to 7 000 mg/kg. Drinking water: 50 mg/l (TrinkwV 2023).

NFSA Decision 6/2022 on chemical contaminants (content not read; whether nitrate in vegetables is covered is unknown).

No peer-reviewed survey of nitrate in Egyptian leafy vegetables was found in the PubMed searches run (search 'Egypt AND nitrate AND vegetables' returned no relevant occurrence study).

評価

Nitrate in leafy greens is a natural consequence of plant physiology and fertilisation, and it is regulated in the EU. For Egypt no data were found. Nitrate from vegetables is also discussed as having possible cardiovascular benefits; this domain does not settle the health question, which belongs to the leafy-greens claim review.

Microbiological safety of fresh produce, herbs and spices

How are fresh produce and herbs controlled for bacteria in the EU and in Egyptian export production?

Raw vegetables, sprouts and herbs can sometimes carry harmful bacteria, in the EU as everywhere. A large German outbreak in 2011 was caused by sprouts. EU inspectors found Egypt's controls for exported strawberries and herbs to be good in 2024. Washing produce and good hygiene reduce the risk; this is not a reason to avoid vegetables.

RASFF (own query): microbiological notifications on Egyptian products 11 (2023), 13 (2024), 4 (2025).

評価

Fresh produce can carry pathogens anywhere; EU data show that plant foods cause serious outbreaks inside the EU too. This supports the archive's statement that leafy greens appear in outbreak records, but the absolute risk per serving is low and it does not make vegetables generally harmful. Egyptian export controls for strawberries, herbs and spices were judged adequate in 2024; the domestic market was not assessed.

No data on microbiological quality of produce on the Egyptian domestic market; irrigation water quality data not reviewed.

Drinking water quality

How does access to safe drinking water differ between Germany and Egypt?

In Germany, almost everyone has tap water that meets strict standards. In Egypt, almost everyone has a basic water source, but about 1 in 5 people do not have water that meets the international definition of 'safely managed'. Water quality can affect stomach and gut health, which is a different issue from food choices.

JMP 2024 (via World Bank API): safely managed drinking water 78.94 % of the Egyptian population; at least basic drinking water 97.30 %; safely managed sanitation 57.34 %.

評価

JMP indicators use one international definition for both countries and are therefore partially comparable, although they are modelled estimates and do not report specific contaminants. Almost all Germans have safely managed water; in Egypt about one in five people do not, although nearly all have at least a basic source. Differences in water quality are a plausible regional factor for gastrointestinal complaints, independent of diet.

No Egyptian contaminant-level drinking-water monitoring report reviewed; German report covers large supply areas only.

G6PD deficiency and favism (fava beans)

How common is G6PD deficiency, the condition that makes fava beans dangerous, in Egypt compared with Germany?

Some people inherit G6PD deficiency, a condition in which eating fava beans can destroy red blood cells. In an Egyptian hospital study about 4 in 100 newborns had it, more often boys. It is much rarer in people of Northern European origin. For people with this condition fava beans are truly dangerous, but for everyone else they are not.

Not a food-law topic; in the EU, fava beans are a legal food.

No measured German population prevalence found; a German review states G6PD deficiency is 'no longer rare' in Germany because of migration from endemic regions.

Neonatal screening at an Egyptian university hospital (2015, n≈2,782): 4.3 % deficient (6.2 % of males, 2.1 % of females). Jaundiced neonates (n=487): 10.10 %. Favism causes acute haemolysis after fava-bean ingestion in G6PD-deficient people; most severe in infants and pregnant women.

評価

Favism is a universal biological mechanism, but its population relevance is regional: G6PD deficiency affects a few percent of Egyptian newborns (more boys), while it is rare among people of Northern European ancestry. The archive is right that fava beans can be dangerous for G6PD-deficient individuals; this is an individual exception, not evidence that fava beans or legumes harm everyone. Germany-specific prevalence data were not found, so no numerical comparison is made.

No representative Egyptian adult prevalence; no German prevalence study found.

Import controls and the meaning of RASFF notifications for Egyptian products

What do EU border notifications (RASFF) on Egyptian products tell us, and what do they not tell us?

The EU's alert system records problems found in food at its borders and in shops. Egyptian fruit, vegetables, herbs and peanuts appear there regularly, mostly for pesticides and mould toxins, so the EU checks many of these shipments more often. But Egypt is not allowed to sell chicken, eggs, milk or farmed fish to the EU at all, so these alerts tell us nothing about those foods. And border alerts never describe food sold inside Egypt.

RASFF is established by Reg. 178/2002. Increased checks: Reg. 2019/1793 (Egypt: peppers 30 %, oranges, sugar apple 30 %, vine leaves 50 %, mango 20 %, strawberries 20 % for pesticides; groundnuts 30 % for aflatoxins, as per consolidated text 30.06.2026). Third-country lists: Reg. 2021/405 (Egypt approved only for casings for residue plans; fishery 'Only wild catch'; frogs' legs). From 3 September 2026: antimicrobial guarantees (Reg. 2023/905, 2026/1189) – Egypt listed only for casings.

RASFF (own query, subject containing 'Egypt', origin EG): 113 (2023), 153 (2024), 119 (2025) notifications; mostly fruit and vegetables (217) and nuts/seeds (86) over 2023–2025; pesticide residues the most frequent hazard (approx. 70–82 per year), aflatoxins 14–47 per year; only one notification on an animal product (lead in salted beef casings, 2023), none on poultry, eggs, milk or fish.

評価

RASFF counts reflect border and market controls on exported consignments in the EU. They depend on trade volume, mandatory check frequencies and notification practice, and they say nothing direct about food sold inside Egypt. Importantly, Egypt is not authorised to export poultry meat, eggs, milk, farmed fish or honey to the EU at all, so there is no EU border evidence whatsoever on the Egyptian animal products that Dr. Elawady warned about. Egyptian export produce shows elevated non-compliance for specific commodities, which the EU handles with increased checks.
