That health-based limits for northern European farmed salmon allow only one meal every five months.

Huang et al. 2006 (A-FSH-07) did report 'at most one meal every 5 months' for northern European farmed salmon, using US EPA cancer slope factors and a 1-in-100,000 risk level. Foran et al. 2005 (A-FSH-04; full text read) reported that to limit dioxin-like intake to 20% above US background, Scottish, Faroese and Norwegian farmed salmon was < 1 meal/month.

The archive turns a conservative screening calculation into consumption advice without context. In the same Foran 2005 paper (full text), using the WHO TDI (1 pg TEQ/kg/day) as criterion, northern European farmed salmon allowed generally < 4 meals/month, not < 1. Huang 2006 itself states that 'even wild Pacific salmon triggered advisories of between one and less than five meals per month' under the same method, so the method restricts almost all salmon. Using 2011 Norwegian data and the TWI then in force (SCF 2001: 14 pg TEQ/kg bw/week), more than 1.3 kg farmed salmon per week would have been needed to reach the TWI for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs (A-FSH-21). EFSA lowered this TWI to 2 pg TEQ/kg bw/week in 2018 (I-FSH-17); by simple proportion (our approximation, not calculated in the study) the corresponding amount would be roughly one seventh, i.e. somewhat under 200 g per week if salmon were the only source - still far more than one meal every five months, but 1.3 kg/week should not be cited as a current safe intake. The same group's benefit-risk paper (A-FSH-05) concluded that the risk is 'partially offset' by omega-3 benefits. Mozaffarian & Rimm (I-FSH-03) concluded that benefits of modest fish intake exceed risks for adults.

Exact meal limits under the stricter 2018 EFSA TWI (2 pg TEQ/kg bw/week) for current salmon were not found in the sources read; the simple-proportion estimate ignores other dietary sources, which EFSA notes already bring average European exposure above the TWI (I-FSH-17).

EFSA lowered the dioxin TWI to 2 pg TEQ/kg bw/week in 2018 and noted that average European exposure from all foods exceeds it (I-FSH-17). This is a whole-diet issue. EU authorities have not issued a 'once every 5 months' limit for salmon.

Not studied for Egypt.

The numbers are quoted correctly, but they are the output of one modelling approach (US EPA cancer slope factors, 1-in-100,000 lifetime risk, sum of all organochlorines, 2002 samples). Reviews weighing benefits and risks and later EU-based assessments reach different conclusions.

Peer-reviewed risk-assessment papers by one research group (Hites/Foran/Carpenter), using conservative screening methods.

Low for today's EU market: based on 2002 contaminant levels and US methods.

Pregnant women and young children may reasonably prefer lower-contaminant fish; this is different from a 5-month limit.

The number is quoted correctly, but it results from a conservative screening model with 2002 data; benefit-risk assessments do not support such a limit.

International benefit-risk assessments outweigh a single screening calculation.

Not valid as current consumption advice.

Screening models (A-FSH-04, A-FSH-07) use cancer slope factors and sum all organochlorines; FAO/WHO and EFSA use tolerable intakes and weigh benefits. Different methods, different questions.
